Wrexham continue to make progress under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, with one summer signing still in disbelief.
Thursday’s loss to Shrewsbury Town was a setback for Wrexham, but the overall outlook remains promising.
Wrexham sit third in the League One table – imaging saying that just five years ago.
That isn’t to excuse Thursday’s poor result though as Wrexham simply have to be better in order to reach the Championship.
Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds continue to provide strong backing and Phil Parkinson is hoping for January business very soon.
The club has moved forward rapidly on and off the pitch, the scale of which has left one player surprised.
Callum Burton and Wrexham sponsors
Wrexham have seen some high-profile sponsors get on board since McElhenney and Reynolds arrived.
United Airlines, Gatorade, TikTok, HP, Meta Quest – some enormous and immediately-recognisable brands have got involved at Wrexham.
Everybody seems to want a slice of the Wrexham story and goalkeeper Callum Burton has admitted his surprise at the day-to-day life around the club.
Burton joined Wrexham over the summer and has now told Mark Howard’s ‘Yours Mine Away’ podcast that the club is always receiving new bits of kit from sponsors.
Burton noted that some Premier League clubs probably don’t receive as much from sponsors as Wrexham do, branding it as ‘mental’.
“That’s the kind of bit that’s still surprising me daily,” said Burton.
“We’ll come in and a new sponsor will have just given us a bit of kit and I’m just like… ‘this is mental’. Probably Premier League clubs aren’t getting some of the bits that we get given,” he added.
Burton’s season may be over
Wrexham wanted new competition for Arthur Okonkwo over the summer and settled on Burton after his exit from Plymouth Argyle.
In an ideal world, you never want to see your first-choice goalkeeper go down and suffer injury problems.
That happened for Wrexham though as Okonkwo suffered a broken wrist, meaning Burton stepped up.
Burton impressed between the sticks but suffered a nightmare blow himself.
An injury suffered against Barnsley in December with the aforementioned Howard stepping up from the bench.
Parkinson now fears that Burton’s season is over having suffered a torn thigh injury.
That may leave Wrexham to bring in another goalkeeper, but only on loan with 28-year-old Burton surely in the plans for the future.
