Striker Signed by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds for Wrexham Now Has Fewer Goals Than Paul Mullin This Season

Posted: 2025-1-1

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds must be relieved they missed out on signing one player for Wrexham during the summer.

The Welsh club had an eventful summer transfer window, with McElhenney and Reynolds providing significant backing.

Wrexham broke their transfer record for the first time in August, paying £500,000 for Ollie Rathbone.

Following Rathbone's signing, the club focused on securing a new centre-forward as the deadline approached. Will Lankshear was linked earlier in the summer, while Bailey Cadamarteri moved to League One rivals Lincoln City.

Ultimately, Wrexham signed Modou Faal on deadline day for a club-record £590,000 from West Bromwich Albion.

However, just before Faal's addition, the McElhenney and Reynolds-backed club had been eyeing another centre-forward.

Will Keane has floundered since Wrexham interest

It was reported that Wrexham made a bid for Will Keane but it was rejected by Preston North End on August 28th.

Keane, the brother of Everton defender Michael Keane, began his career with Manchester United before eventually joining Preston from Wigan Athletic in 2023.

His debut campaign at Deepdale saw the striker score an impressive 13 goals and provide three assists in 38 matches.

As a result, it looked as though Wrexham’s failure to sign him over the summer was a major missed opportunity.

However, his form in 2024/25 has completely fallen off a cliff, with Keane having so far managed just score just one goal in 11 league matches this term.

Even a struggling Paul Mullin has scored more than the 31-year-old this season, with it now probably unlikely Wrexham will reignite their transfer interest in January.

Wrexham want to sign a striker

Despite paying record money for Faal, Wrexham want a striker to arrive in the upcoming winter window

Patrick Bamford has been linked but his wage and potential transfer fee may make a move difficult to complete for a side in League One.

Wrexham want to sign Ethan Wheatley from Manchester United as well but that move would be a loan, rather than a permanent switch.

For the time being though, the club will have to make do with their current options for the meeting with Barnsley on January 1st.

Steven Fletcher is unlikely to start but his recent form off the bench should help ease Wrexham’s centre-forward woes until a new signing can be made.
